Halloween chill out: read, sing, watch!

1. Read

Black and orange are typically associated with Halloween. Orange is a symbol of strength and endurance and, along with brown and gold, stands for the harvest and autumn. Black is typically a symbol of death and darkness and acts as a reminder that Halloween once was a festival that marked the boundaries between life and death..(read more...)

2. Sing

HALLOWEEN SONG LYRICS:

Halloween, Halloween
Creepy, crawly Halloween
Trick or treat all in fun,
October 31st has come

Halloween, Halloween
Spooky, kooky Halloween
Kids in costumes, what a sight
On Halloween tonight

Big black cats
Vampire bats
Ghosts and goblins out tonight
Causing quite a fright

Halloween, Halloween
Painted faces, what a scene
Door to door
They trick or treat
For something sweet to eat

Halloween, Halloween
Celebrating Halloween
Jack-o'-lanterns all aglow
So the ancient stories go

Halloween, Halloween
Celtics started Halloween
They celebrated harvest time
With gifts of food and wine

Candles glow
Spirits go
Bringing luck and fortune too
This is what they knew

Halloween, Halloween
Now they call it Halloween
Skulls and bones
Create the scene
Very scary Halloween

Halloween, Halloween
Let's have fun on Halloween
Witches fly
And children scream
Tonight on Halloween

Witches fly
And children scream
Tonight on Halloween!

Funny Riddles for Everyone!

Bubble Recipe

Make your own bubble blowing mixture!
Summer wouldn't be summer without the chance to blow  bubbles! Use our bubble recipe to make up your own batch of super bubble mixture. Store it in jars or bottles overnight for an even better mixture.

Make bubble wands

If you don't mind getting a bit soapy, you can blow surprisingly large bubbles by looping your thumb and first finger into a bubble blowing wand!
Or loop some wire (garden wire works particularly well and is easy to loop) into home-made bubble wands. You can made huge wands out of wire coat-hangers, but adult supervision is required because the ends can be sharp. Pipe cleaners work too, but get soggy.
Drinking straws make lots and lots of sweet little bubbles.
If you have any scooby-doos in the house (the plastic strings used for making key fobs - not the cartoon dog!), you can easily twist these into excellent, colourful bubble wands. With a bit of practice you can make 3 or even 4 loops from one scooby-doo string.
Raid your kitchen drawers - look carefully and there are bound to be a few kitchen implements that have holes in them!

Bubble Recipe

1/2 cup of dish detergent (washing up liquid)
5 cups water (soft water is best - if your water is very hard consider using distilled or bottled water)
2 tablespoons glycerine (available at the pharmacy or supermarket). You can substitute light corn syrup (not golden syrup!)
Mix the ingredients together very carefully, so that you they don't get too bubbly. Pour into storage containers and, if possible, leave overnight to blend.

Other Bubbly Activities

Put some music on and pretend to be bubbles, blowing about in the wind
Try catching a bubble on a wet finger, and then on a dry finger. What do you notice? It should be much easier if your finger is wet. Why?
Add bubble bath to a plastic basin of water and whisk it up to create lots of small bubbles - or better still, give the kids a hand-held whisk and let them do it! Play with the bubbles.
As above, but this time provide plastic toys and washable dolls as well as cloths, sponges, old scrubbing brushes and old toothbrushes. Have a good scrubbing and cleaning session - great fun.
When my daughter was small there was nothing she liked more than splashing soapy water on the kitchen small and scrubbing it, whilst singing "It's a hard knock life" from the musical Annie. Really!
Find some bubble wrap and pop bubbles! Or cut round shapes out of the bubble wrap and paint one side, then use them to make bubble prints on a large piece of paper.
Make a bubbly bottle toy. Half fill a plastic bottle with water. Add some food colouring and a really good slug of liquid detergent. Paint some glue around the top of the bottle before screwing on the cap and leaving to dry (alternatively, tape the bottle shut with masking tape). Now shake!

About an abstract notion. Conscience

Nowadays it is often said so as to be a success you should be scruples. Is that really true? I am not going to be moralistic, let’s just think if we can do without conscience.

So the first question that inevitably comes to mind is what is conscience? The dictionary gives the definition that it is a set of feelings that stop you from doing something wrong or that make you feel guilty when you have done something wrong. Well, this is a good definition and as expected it is too abstract. Let’s try to make it more concrete giving some examples.  I even suggest that we should group them. Of course all the illustrations are very personal, because each of us has their own system of values. And I hope you will not react to these innocent unpretentious attempts to reflect upon very serious things with an air of sanctimonious disapproval.

Let’s start. The first group of examples is when we should not have pangs of conscience, but we have. It is a very strange feeling, when you have done nothing, but something is gnawing you like a starving dog. I suppose, this is a topical problem for very responsible and worrisome people. For instance, if you have a very important appointment, but suddenly fall ill running a very high temperature. Usually we have two options: the first one is to take a ton of pills and to keep your word or, the second option, is to phone and cancel the meeting. Without any doubts we usually choose the first variant forgetting about our precious health, but what if we really seriously ill and cannot afford such luxury as to go out, infect all people around and get complications of the disease? We cancel the appointment and SHE comes. The inability to keep our promise oppresses and the pangs of conscience worsen the situation.

Let’s imagine the same situation with a few corrections. We are not fatally ill but still we call off the meeting and…wonders never cease!...we feel perfect both physically and morally. That is the second group when we should have twinges of conscience but we do not. That is not really bad, we retain so many nerve cells, and good actors even may sniff, with a mixture of self-righteousness and self-pity, if somebody dare doubt their lies or almost lies, as it is said “just a small exaggeration”. We can generate some more illustrative examples that are more close to life. You had a blind date and as it usually happens the partner is turned out to be absolutely not to your liking. That is great if the second participant of the date feels the same, and if he or she does not? In most cases we cannot put it directly and even indirectly. Trying to avoid an unpleasant talk, with an enviable ingenuity we invent all sorts of the so-called get-outs until the person understands that he or she is not a desirable person in our circle. Wicked, isn’t it? Oh, yes, but that’s the truth of life, nobody likes unpleasant talks. We can include in this group an enormous number of more, so to say, innocent things that we see in the street every day: laughing when somebody slips on the ice or stumbles, giggling over somebody’s appearance and behaviour, discussing a person behind his or her back and many-many other things that by the way we, I also include myself in this “we”, also do from time to time or even more often.

And at last the third group when we should be ashamed and we are. This group is the most simple and doesn’t need any examples, because you can easily recall some yourself.

So what conclusion can we make after all? I guess we will not be able to find an adult with clear conscience even if we do our best, at least I hope so :) . Conscience comes when we don’t need it and would not appear when we badly need it, but it is a restricting feeling that still helps us sometimes not to be absolute swine.
