Causative

http://doyouloveenglish.blogspot.ru/2011/11/causative.html

From the illustration, we can write a story line as following:
1. Bob's computer is broken.
2. He takes it to the repairman.
3. He has the repairman fix his computer OR He has his computer fixed

From the story line above, we can see that Bob DOES NOT fix his computer by himself. He ASKS SOMEONE ELSE to do it. This kind of sentence is called CAUSATIVE.
CAUSATIVE is a sentence indicates someone asks, tells, or makes someone else to do something for him/her.
There are 2 types of  CAUSATIVE: ACTIVE and PASSIVE

ACTIVE :
He has the repairman fix his computer

We can use have someone do something to talk about giving instructions or orders (more common in American English).

    • had my assistant type the report.
    • I'll have my lawyer look into it.
Here we should remember how to use causative verbs

PASSIVE:

He has his computer fixed

  1. We use causative when arranging for someone to do something for us.

  • They had their car repaired.
They arranged for someone to repair it
They repaired their car.
They did it themselves

  • had my hair cut yesterday.
I went to the hairdresser
I cut my hair yesterday.
I cut it myself

  1. We use causative when someone does something to us.

  • Bill had his money stolen.

p.p. is Past Participle, i.e. the third form of the verb. For example, stolen, beaten, played.
